Clif has served as the 11th president of Missouri State University since 2011. He has led remarkable advancements during his tenure including setting new records in numbers of graduates, graduate employment rates, and overall enrollment. Under his leadership the university has enhanced diversity, maintained affordability for students, and upgraded campus facilities. He pioneered innovative degree programs and secured a Silver STARS rating for sustainability. Smart’s leadership yielded records in state appropriations, private gifts, and grants. He concurrently held pivotal roles in prominent organizations, such as the NCAA Division I Board of Directors and Mercy Health Springfield Communities Board. Smart, residing in Springfield for over 20 years, previously served as the university’s general counsel and excelled in private legal practice.
